After a decade of career coaching, I'm seeing something that worries me: people using AI to rewrite their resumes and ending up with beautiful, polished, completely hollow documents. The words sound impressive. But when I ask about them in a mock interview, the person can't back them up — because an AI wrote it, not them. A resume is ultimately a preview of how you'll interview. If AI wrote your bullets, you'll sound robotic when you explain them in person.
Here's what AI is genuinely useful for in a job search, and where you still need a human.
AI is excellent for market research. I've been using it to pull in LinkedIn job alerts from my Gmail automatically, organize them into a Google Sheet with company, title, location, salary, and required skills — all without manually clicking through postings. That kind of automation is a real time-saver and helps you stay on top of what the market actually wants right now.
AI can help you draft a resume — but it needs a human editor. It tends to reach for corporate buzzwords and vague descriptions. It doesn't know which tools are actually respected in your specific industry, or how to frame an experience so it resonates with a particular type of hiring manager. That's where an experienced career coach adds irreplaceable value: the judgment and context that AI simply can't access.
For interview prep, AI is a useful sparring partner. Give it your resume, the job description, and the interviewer's LinkedIn profile, and ask it to generate likely questions. Write out draft answers. But then practice out loud with someone who understands your field. AI can't assess your delivery, your body language, or whether your answer might come across as a red flag to an experienced interviewer. Some things that sound fine on paper land completely wrong when spoken — and you need a real human to catch those before the actual interview.
Use AI as your research assistant and first-draft engine. But don't skip the human layer. The job market is too competitive right now to show up with anything less than your sharpest, most authentic self.
