If you've been sending applications into the void and wondering why you're not hearing back, here's the honest answer: cold applications are a terrible strategy in this market.
Recruiters get hundreds of applicants per role. Applicant tracking systems filter most of them out before a human ever sees them. The candidates who consistently get calls are the ones who show up in searches — not the ones who show up in the apply queue.
The most practical change you can make right now: enable the "Open to Work" feature on LinkedIn, but set it to visible to recruiters only (not the public green badge). LinkedIn's recruiter tool prioritizes profiles with this flag in search results. Set your location to the metropolitan area where you want to work — even if you currently live farther out — because most recruiter searches are radius-based.
Your profile keywords matter a lot. Go through the job descriptions for roles you want and identify which terms appear repeatedly. Make sure those exact terms appear in your About section, your job titles, and your bullet points. LinkedIn's algorithm is matching those keywords when recruiters search — if they're not in your profile, you won't surface.
The referral channel is even more powerful than LinkedIn search. The best opportunities I've seen come from former managers and colleagues who've moved on and are now in a position to hire. Stay in touch with the people you've worked with. Not transactionally — actually stay in touch. Congratulate them when they post milestones. Comment on their content when you have something real to add. When they need someone they trust for an important hire, you want to be the person who comes to mind.
Building a public presence in your field — writing about your expertise, speaking at industry events, showing up as someone worth knowing — is a slower play but an extraordinarily powerful one. I know someone who spent a year building a reputation around AI in marketing and got headhunted by a major tech company for a VP-level role. No application. Just visibility and credibility built over time.
